Project Ford 9"...

Follow along as I attempt to do a budget build-up on an old Ford 9" rear axle.

Well folks, the original 9" axle I bought has found a new home under a slightly modified Chevy S-10. I now have a new housing from an '83 1/2 ton. It has the large outer bearings and 3 1/4" axle tubes! There's a new third member to go along with it sporting 4.88 gears and a Detroit locker. Now to get the housing narrowed, new shafts, and get that rascal under the YJ! And yes...sometimes things change. So much for the budget build-up. Enter Sunray Engineering.

The Bottom Line

All said and done, I came in just under $1500 for the whole axle build up. More than I originally planned, but I decided to make a couple of changes at the last minute that bumped the price up.

Installed and Ready to Wheel

After much waiting, the 9" is built and installed! I had the axle shafts drilled for both lug patterns, as well as having the pumpkin shaved for extra ground clearance. Other than this is a much heavier axle than a Dana 35, the install went very well.
